Saturday Update – 14th September 2024
Week 2 of the Mixed hockey season was derby day with A vs B and C vs D on the cards.
The conditions were more favourable for hockey this week than the scorcher of last week, but the heat came from the intense rivalry on the pitch !
Vikings Mixed A (6 – 0) Vikings Mixed B
A hard game, well fought by both teams. Vikings A as a team were still rusty and showed at times but got the job done against a very promising B team.
The B team showed a lot of guts and kept fighting right up to the final whistle. The game got scrappy at times and with both teams going for the win regardless of playing for the same club, which shows how competitive we all are.
The A team eventually coming out on top after they started taking their chances more in the second half. B team worked hard right up to the final whistle but tiredness took its toll after half time with the A teams superior skill and quality telling.
Vikings A Player of the Match – Clodagh Neilan
Vikings B Player of the Match – Ryan Hogan
Vikings Mixed C (7 – 3) Vikings Mixed D
Another very competitive match between both teams in Division 1.
The C team pushed from the off but an upset came from the D team from a quick break, with Ian Perry putting the D team 1-0 to the good.
However the Dougal boys made a big difference for the C team in driving their attacks, and soon the C team levelled the score and then added another shortly after.
It became a game of attack vs defence, with the D team occasionally managing to put the C team under pressure and the half finished 3-2 to the C team.
Again a similar pattern in the second half with Josh Kaighin making some driving runs into the D and finishing well, a few moments of sloppy play allowed the C team to add some gloss to the scoreline scoring a few late goals with the D team managing to grab another as well.
Vikings C Player of the Match – Faye Williams
Vikings D Player of the Match – Suzie Slater
Vikings Mixed E (7 – 1) Bacchas Mixed D
Vikings E have started the season well and continued this with a strong performance against an experienced Bacchas team.
Once again the team held the ball well and made some excellent runs for each other.
First goal coming from an excellent reverse hit across goal from Harry Woods, who then quickly followed this by saving one off our own goal line.
The E team continued working the ball down the wings and after some great work between Patrick, Henry and Amelie, Ciaran Stephens tapped in a second at the back post.
2-0 at half time and everything was going to plan, but Bachas decided to wake us up with an early second half goal.
At 3-1 Bacchas then began to apply more pressure via mazy runs from midfield from Christian Davis, but some strong tackles from Morgan Braidwood and Jansen Montalban restricted Bacchas chances.
As the half wore on, Jacob Harding took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored a hatrick of solo goals with the final goal being hammered into the top left corner to give the keeper no chance.
At 6-1 and the team enjoying themselves Ciaran Stephens then made a solo run down the right, and played a lovely cross across the D to debutant Emily Gaylor to get a tap in at the back post.
Vikings E now sit top of the table after 2 games.
Player of the Match – Jacob Harding
Vikings Mixed U15 (3 – 2) Harlequins U15
Finally our U15 team were on the hunt for their first win of the season after a narrow defeat to Ramsey last week.
A number of juniors stepped up to play their first u15 game, and played extremely well for the first time on a full pitch.
Gabriel Corran stepped in as goalkeeper and did an amazing job in goal for the first time and made it look like he had been playing in goals for a while with a great performance.
Jansen Montalban made some brilliant tackles from the back to help solidify the defence with two great goals from Henry Stewart and one for Theo Robertson.
The U15 come up against Castletown Sabres next week hopng for 2 more points !
