Saturday Update – 5th October 2024
Week 5 of the Mixed hockey season was the first round for the Cup, Plate and Bowl for our senior mixed teams.
It was a tough weekend with only 2 wins from our 6 games to leave only the Mixed A and Mixed B team left in the Cup.
Vikings Mixed A (5 – 1) Bacchas Mixed B
In a repeat of last week’s league fixture, our A team matched up against Bacchas B again.
A somewhat frustrating game for the A team in which they could have had more goals, albeit they played well as a unit.
2 braces from Jon Cooper and Tom Burrows and a goal for Kim Carney settled this one, with Vikings A having a derby match against the B team in the Semi-final.
Vikings A Player of the Match – Eddie Caley
Vikings Mixed B (1 – 1) Castletown Celts (4 -3 on flicks)
Huge result for Vikings B showing they can beat the more well established Premier league sides.
Despite Vikings creating more in the final third, it was an even game with periods of dominance for both teams and there was a determination not to lose from both Vikings and Castletown.
After the game ended 1-1 (HT 1-1) the game went to penalty strokes.
Vikings B came out on top after sudden death 4-3 winners showing they are not a team to be dismissed and marching on into the semi finals of the Cup.
The whole team could have taken home Player Of The Match today, but the team voted Elena Caley as POTM with her constant running, dogged defending and effectiveness in attack. No one will have come close to the miles she ran in today’s game.
Vikings B Player of the Match – Elena Caley
Vikings Mixed C (0 – 1) Bacchas Mixed C
A tough match for the C team against top of the table Bacchas.
The two teams cancelling each other out for a lot of the match with the scoreline 0-0 at half time.
This was a very tight game and unfortunately for Vikings, Bacchas managed to sneak a goal in the second half to win the match and progress to the next round of the Mixed Plate.
Vikings C Player of the Match – Lee Cowell
Vikings Mixed D (0 – 6) Castletown Southerners
After the great win last week, Vikings were up against it versus Castletown Southerners who are pushing Bacchas C for the top of the league spot in Division 1.
Vikings defence were under pressure from the off with the speed and movement of the Castletown players causing problems, and although Vikings managed to stave off the early attacks, they succumbed to a well worked goal with Town adding two more before half-time.
The D team put in a better performance in the second half with Will Hampson in the viking’s goal making numerous saves, but again the wave after wave of Castletown attacks eventually paid dividends with them adding 3 more goals to finish 6-0 and progress to the next round.
Vikings D Player of the Match – Will Hampson
Vikings Mixed E (0 – 9) Harlequins Mixed B
A tough weekend for the Vikings E team this week.
Playing a team from the league above was always going to be a tough ask but the E team put in a real battling performance!
Everyone worked together, didn’t stop running and did not let their heads drop.
Poppy Gerrard in the Vikings net had an outstanding game, a total of 57 saves in the match, including countless ones that many keepers may not have got to.
The E team return to league action against the lower Harlequins Colts team this weekend hoping for a better result !
Vikings E Player of the Match – Poppy Gerrard
Vikings Mixed U15 (2 – 6) Valkyrs U15
This was always going to be tough match against last year’s league winners who currently sit top of the league.
After the first 10 minutes of shakiness the U15s improved massively and second half gave Valkyrs a really good game.
Player of the Match was Theo Hampson for making countless saves including about 6 in one go !
